The Complete Map — 22 Patterns of زَيْدٌ قَائِمٌ
One sentence — Zayd is standing — pushed through every particle and defective verb. Watch two things on each card: the case endings (blue = مَرْفُوع, red = مَنْصُوب) and the shade of meaning the particle adds — emphasis, restriction, negation, wish, hope, contrast, or tense.
A
No Case Change
الْمُبْتَدَأُ مَرْفُوعٌ وَالْخَبَرُ مَرْفُوعٌ
These particles add meaning — emphasis, restriction, questioning, topicalisation — but are non-governing (غير عاملة): both words stay مرفوع. Teach students to hear the added meaning while confirming with their eyes that nothing changed grammatically.
زَيْدٌ قَائِمٌZayd is standing.
مبتدأ مرفوعخبر مرفوع
The basic nominal sentence: a plain, unemphasised statement — no certainty, no restriction, simply information. This is the reference point for every change of meaning below.
﴿وَاللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ﴾
البقرة 2:218
Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
زَيْدٌ قَائِمٌ فِي الْمَسْجِدِZayd is standing in the mosque.
مبتدأ مرفوعخبر مرفوعجارّ ومجرور
The جَارّ وَمَجْرُور (shibh jumlah) attaches extra information — place, manner, association — without touching the mubtadaʾ–khabar relationship. Later students will see this same shibh jumlah promoted to be the khabar itself (patterns 09, 14, 16).
﴿اللَّهُ لَطِيفٌ بِعِبَادِهِ﴾
الشورى 42:19
Allah is Most Kind and Subtle with His servants.
لَـزَيْدٌ قَائِمٌCertainly, Zayd is standing.
مبتدأ مرفوعخبر مرفوع
لَامُ الِابْتِدَاءِ (lām of inception) sits on the mubtadaʾ and adds one degree of emphasis — about one oath's worth of certainty — with zero effect on iʿrāb. It answers a listener who mildly doubts. Keep this card in mind: in pattern 09 this same lām is forced to slide.
﴿وَلَلْآخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ لَكَ مِنَ الْأُولَىٰ﴾
الضحى 93:4
Surely the Hereafter is better for you than the present life.
إِنَّمَا زَيْدٌ قَائِمٌZayd is only standing.
مبتدأ مرفوعخبر مرفوع
مَا الْكَافَّةُ ("the restraining mā") attaches to إِنَّ and cancels its governing power, so both nouns return to rafʿ. The meaning gains ḥaṣr (حَصْر) — restriction / exclusivity: the khabar is confined to the mubtadaʾ. "Zayd is nothing but standing." In ﴾إنما اللهُ إلهٌ واحدٌ﴿ the exclusivity is doctrinal: divinity confined to one God alone.
﴿إِنَّمَا اللَّهُ إِلَٰهٌ وَاحِدٌ﴾
النساء 4:171
Allah is only One God.
05Negation · نفيRestriction — stronger
إِنْ زَيْدٌ إِلَّا قَائِمٌZayd is nothing but standing.
مبتدأ مرفوعخبر مرفوع
Here إِنْ is nāfiyah (= مَا, "not") and non-governing. The formula negation + إِلَّا is the classic recipe for ḥaṣr — and rhetoricians rank it stronger than إِنَّمَا, because it first demolishes every possibility (نفي) then makes one exception (استثناء). Use it when the audience actively denies the claim: إنّما gently narrows; إنْ…إلا slams every other door.
﴿إِنْ هَٰذَا إِلَّا سِحْرٌ مُبِينٌ﴾
الأنعام 6:7
This is nothing but obvious magic.
هَلْ زَيْدٌ قَائِمٌ؟Is Zayd standing?
مبتدأ مرفوعخبر مرفوع
هَلْ is a pure yes/no interrogative — no governing effect. Note the rhetorical use in the āyah: a question expecting (and urging) "yes," shading toward a command to be grateful. Its sister أَ (hamzat al-istifhām) appears in pattern 16, where the question is purely rhetorical (تقريري).
﴿فَهَلْ أَنْتُمْ شَاكِرُونَ﴾
الأنبياء 21:80
Will you then be grateful?
07Topicalisation · تفصيلEmphasis
أَمَّا زَيْدٌ فَـقَائِمٌAs for Zayd — he is standing.
مبتدأ مرفوعخبر مرفوع
أَمَّا is the particle of detail & condition (حرف شرط وتفصيل): it lifts a topic into the spotlight and its answer must begin with فَـ. Grammarians read it as carrying the force of "whatever the case may be…" (مهما يكن من شيء), so it also adds emphasis. Perfect for contrastive teaching: as for the believers… as for the disbelievers…
﴿فَأَمَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا فَيَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّهُ الْحَقُّ مِنْ رَبِّهِمْ﴾
البقرة 2:26
As for those who believe, they know that it is the truth from their Lord.
B
إِنَّ & Her Sisters — Ism becomes Manṣūb
الاسم منصوب · الخبر مرفوع
The six sisters (إِنَّ، أَنَّ، كَأَنَّ، لَيْتَ، لَعَلَّ، لَكِنَّ) plus لَا of categorical negation. They enter upon the nominal sentence: the mubtadaʾ becomes their ism (منصوب); the khabar stays مرفوع. Same skeleton, different flavours of meaning.
إِنَّ زَيْدًا قَائِمٌIndeed, Zayd is standing.
اسم إنّ منصوبخبر إنّ مرفوع
إِنَّ = one degree of emphasis (توكيد), like swearing once. Deployed for a listener who is hesitant or doubtful. Watch the flip: the ism takes fatḥa, the khabar keeps ḍamma — the exact mirror of كان's family in Section C.
﴿إِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ﴾
البقرة 2:173
Indeed, Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
09Double emphasis · توكيدان
إِنَّ زَيْدًا لَـقَائِمٌIndeed, Zayd is most certainly standing.
اسم إنّ منصوبخبر إنّ مرفوع
اللَّامُ الْمُزَحْلَقَةُ — the "slid" lām. The lām of inception (card 03) originally belongs on the mubtadaʾ: لَزَيْدٌ قَائِمٌ. But two emphasis particles can't stand shoulder-to-shoulder at the head, so when إِنَّ arrives the lām slides onto the khabar. Result: two degrees of emphasis — for a listener who denies the claim (إنكار). The ladder: plain (01) → doubter gets إنّ (08) → denier gets إنّ + lām (09).
﴿إِنَّ الْإِنْسَانَ لَفِي خُسْرٍ﴾
العصر 103:2
Indeed, humanity is certainly in loss.
Fine point: here the lām precedes a prepositional-phrase khabar (لَفِي خُسْرٍ) — shibh jumlah في محل رفع, not a visibly marfūʿ word. The lām happily precedes a single word (لَقَائِمٌ), a shibh jumlah (لَفِي خُسْرٍ), or a pronoun (﴾لَهُوَ الْغَنِيُّ﴿).
كَأَنَّ زَيْدًا قَائِمٌIt is as though Zayd is standing.
اسم كأنّ منصوبخبر كأنّ مرفوع
كَأَنَّ = تَشْبِيه — resemblance, vivid impression, supposition. It compresses a whole simile into one particle (analysed as كَـ + أَنَّ). The Qurʾān uses it to paint pictures: hypocrites like propped-up timbers, the drowned like uprooted palm trunks.
﴿كَأَنَّ فِي أُذُنَيْهِ وَقْرًا﴾
لقمان 31:7
As though there were deafness in his ears.
Fine point: this āyah is inverted — فِي أُذُنَيْهِ is the fronted khabar (shibh jumlah, في محل رفع) and وَقْرًا the delayed ism, manṣūb. The fronting is obligatory because the ism is indefinite (نكرة) and the khabar is a prepositional phrase — the same rule as فِي الدَّارِ رَجُلٌ.
لَيْتَ زَيْدًا قَائِمٌIf only Zayd were standing.
اسم ليت منصوبخبر ليت مرفوع
لَيْتَ = تَمَنٍّ — a wish for the impossible or very unlikely. Contrast لَعَلَّ (next card): ليت yearns for what is out of reach; لعلّ hopes for the attainable. In the Qurʾān it is the vocabulary of regret — often on the tongues of people on the Day of Judgement.
﴿يَا لَيْتَ قَوْمِي يَعْلَمُونَ﴾
يس 36:26
If only my people knew.
Fine points: (1) the khabar here is a verbal sentence يَعْلَمُونَ — جملة فعلية في محل رفع, not a single marfūʿ word. (2) يَا before ليت is a particle of alerting (تنبيه), not a true vocative. (3) The ism قَوْمِي is manṣūb with a fatḥa hidden by the yāʾ of possession.
لَعَلَّ زَيْدًا قَائِمٌPerhaps Zayd is standing.
اسم لعلّ منصوبخبر لعلّ مرفوع
لَعَلَّ = تَرَجٍّ — hope or expectation for something possible (and إشفاق, apprehension, when the awaited thing is feared). The teaching pair: ليت = impossible wish · لعلّ = achievable hope. Students can test any sentence by asking: could this realistically happen?
﴿لَعَلَّ السَّاعَةَ قَرِيبٌ﴾
الشورى 42:17
Perhaps the Hour is near.
لَكِنَّ زَيْدًا قَائِمٌ…but Zayd is standing.
اسم لكنّ منصوبخبر لكنّ مرفوع
لَكِنَّ = اسْتِدْرَاك — correction of an impression the previous clause might create: the people sat, but Zayd is standing. It must follow prior speech; it cannot open a discourse. (The lightened لَكِنْ, with sukūn, is non-governing — a neat way to show that the shaddah carries the governing power.)
﴿وَلَٰكِنَّ اللَّهَ ذُو فَضْلٍ عَلَى الْعَالَمِينَ﴾
البقرة 2:251
But Allah is the Possessor of bounty to all creation.
14Categorical negation · نفي الجنس
لَا رَجُلَ قَائِمٌNo man at all is standing.
اسم لا مبني على الفتح في محل نصبخبر لا مرفوع
لَا النَّافِيَةُ لِلْجِنْسِ negates the entire category (استغراق الجنس) — not one man, but every conceivable man. That absoluteness is why its indefinite ism is built on fatḥa (no tanwīn: رَجُلَ, not رَجُلًا). Compare the weaker لا العاملة عمل ليس, which negates only one instance. ﴾لَا رَيْبَ فِيهِ﴿ means: doubt of any kind whatsoever is denied.
﴿لَا رَيْبَ فِيهِ﴾
البقرة 2:2
There is no doubt in it — of any kind.
Fine point: the khabar فِيهِ is a shibh jumlah في محل رفع (many grammarians say the khabar of لا here is omitted, estimated as مَوْجُود). Either way, no visibly marfūʿ word appears.
C
كَانَ & Her Sisters — Khabar becomes Manṣūb
الاسم مرفوع · الخبر منصوب
Defective verbs (أفعال ناقصة) and the Ḥijāzī مَا. They keep the ism مرفوع and push the khabar into نصب — the mirror image of Section B. Their contribution is mostly tense, continuity, and negation.
مَا زَيْدٌ قَائِمًاZayd is not standing.
اسم ما مرفوعخبر ما منصوب
مَا الْحِجَازِيَّةُ works like لَيْسَ (its conditions: the khabar must not precede the ism, and no إلا intervenes — with إلا it loses its work and the khabar returns to rafʿ: مَا زَيْدٌ إِلَّا قَائِمٌ). Tamīm left مَا non-governing; the Ḥijāz — and the Qurʾān — give it the work of ليس. In يوسف the women's astonished negation lands with full Ḥijāzī force.
﴿مَا هَٰذَا بَشَرًا﴾
يوسف 12:31
This is not a human being.
16Present negation · نفي+ باء زائدة
لَيْسَ زَيْدٌ قَائِمًاZayd is not standing.
اسم ليس مرفوعخبر ليس منصوب
لَيْسَ — a frozen defective verb, the dedicated tool of present-state negation. Its khabar very often takes the extra bāʾ (الباء الزائدة) for added emphasis: لَيْسَ… بِـ. In the āyah the hamza of istifhām makes the question rhetorical-affirmatory (تقريري): "Is Allah not sufficient?" = "He most certainly is."
﴿أَلَيْسَ اللَّهُ بِكَافٍ عَبْدَهُ﴾
الزمر 39:36
Is Allah not sufficient for His servant?
Fine points: (1) كَافٍ is مجرور لفظًا بالباء الزائدة، منصوب محلًّا — jarr in form, naṣb in position as khabar. (2) عَبْدَهُ is not the khabar: it is the مفعول به of كافٍ, because the ism al-fāʿil retains the verbal force of يَكْفِي. The whole phrase بِكَافٍ عَبْدَهُ is the khabar unit.
كَانَ زَيْدٌ قَائِمًاZayd was standing.
اسم كان مرفوعخبر كان منصوب
كَانَ normally shifts the nominal sentence into the past. But when its subject is Allah and the khabar is an eternal attribute, exegetes read it as continuity (الدوام والاستمرار): ﴾وَكَانَ اللَّهُ عَلِيمًا﴿ = "Allah has always been, and remains, All-Knowing" — not "used to be." A beautiful case of context overriding the default tense.
﴿وَكَانَ اللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيمًا﴾
الأحزاب 33:40
Allah has always been All-Knowing of everything.
18Past / categorical negation
مَا كَانَ زَيْدٌ قَائِمًاZayd was not standing.
اسم كان مرفوعخبر كان منصوب
مَا + كَانَ negates the past — but in Qurʾānic usage often rises to categorical denial: "it was never the case, and could not be." In الأحزاب 33:40 it denies fatherhood absolutely, not just at one past moment. Teach students to check context: simple past negation vs. emphatic "never was / never could be."
﴿مَا كَانَ مُحَمَّدٌ أَبَا أَحَدٍ مِنْ رِجَالِكُمْ﴾
الأحزاب 33:40
Muhammad is not the father of any of your men.
لَمْ يَكُنْ زَيْدٌ قَائِمًاZayd was not standing.
اسم يكن مرفوعخبر يكن منصوب
لَمْ takes the present verb, makes it majzūm (يَكُنْ), and flips its meaning to negated past — a double operation students enjoy once they see it. Nuance vs. card 18: لم يكن is the crisper, more decisive "did not," while ما كان often carries broader, sometimes categorical, denial.
﴿لَمْ يَكُنِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ وَالْمُشْرِكِينَ مُنْفَكِّينَ﴾
البينة 98:1
The disbelievers among the People of the Book and the polytheists were not going to desist.
مَا زَالَ زَيْدٌ قَائِمًاZayd is still standing.
اسم زال مرفوعخبر زال منصوب
مَا زَالَ — negation of ceasing = continuation: "has not stopped being" → "is still." A negative particle producing a positive, ongoing meaning: two negatives building an affirmation. زال in this family may only be used with a preceding negation (or its like).
﴿فَمَا زَالَتْ تِلْكَ دَعْوَاهُمْ﴾
الأنبياء 21:15
That cry of theirs continued (until We mowed them down).
Fine point: the khabar دَعْوَاهُمْ is manṣūb with a fatḥa hidden on the alif (مقدّرة على الألف) — the case is real but invisible.
سَـيَكُونُ زَيْدٌ قَائِمًاZayd will be standing.
اسم يكون مرفوعخبر يكون منصوب
سَـ (near future; سَوْفَ for the more distant) fixes يَكُونُ in the future. Cases are unchanged from كان's rule — tense particles never disturb the ism/khabar cases; only the verb form moves.
﴿عَلِمَ أَنْ سَيَكُونُ مِنْكُمْ مَرْضَىٰ﴾
المزمل 73:20
He knew that there would be sick people among you.
Fine point: the āyah is inverted — مِنْكُمْ is the fronted khabar (shibh jumlah) and مَرْضَىٰ the delayed ism, marfūʿ with a hidden ḍamma on the maqṣūrah alif. (Also: this أَنْ is the lightened أَنَّ — أنْ المخففة من الثقيلة.)
22Future negation · نفي المستقبل
لَنْ يَكُونَ زَيْدٌ قَائِمًاZayd will not be standing.
اسم يكون مرفوعخبر يكون منصوب
لَنْ negates the future and makes the verb itself manṣūb (يَكُونَ). It is emphatic future denial (some, like al-Zamakhsharī, argued it implies perpetual negation, تأبيد; the majority say strong but not necessarily eternal). Note the symmetry with card 19: لم = jazm + past; لن = naṣb + future.
﴿فَلَنْ أَكُونَ ظَهِيرًا لِلْمُجْرِمِينَ﴾
القصص 28:17
So I will never be a supporter of the criminals.
Suggested Teaching Flow
- Anchor the baseline (01–02): both marfūʿ. Recite زَيْدٌ قَائِمٌ until the ḍammas are automatic.
- Add meaning without touching grammar (03–07): lām of emphasis, then the two flavours of restriction — إِنَّمَا (gentle ḥaṣr) vs. إِنْ…إِلَّا (stronger: negation + exception) — then question and topic.
- Flip the ism (08–14): إنّ and sisters. Drill the emphasis ladder — plain → إنّ → إنّ + المزحلقة — then the meaning pairs: ليت (impossible) vs لعلّ (possible); لكنّ (correction); لا الجنس (total denial).
- Flip the khabar (15–22): كان's family and Ḥijāzī ما. Organise by time-line: present negation → past → past negation → continuation → future → future negation.
- Finish with the fine points: shibh jumlah and clausal khabars (محلّ, not visible case), fronting when the ism is indefinite, the extra bāʾ on ليس's khabar, and the participle governing its own object (بِكَافٍ عَبْدَهُ).
